Dr Eduardo Calonje, MD, DipRCPath Course Director/Staff Lecturer
Dr Eduardo Calonje graduated from the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia followed by training in Clinical Pathology in the same institution. This was followed by a Dermatopathology Fellowship in Cardiff, Wales with a scolarship from the British Council and a Visiting Fellowship in Dermatopathology under Dr Daniel Santa Cruz in St Louis, Missouri, USA. After this he became a Senior Registrar in Dermatology and Dermatopathology at St John’s Institute of Dermatology, St Thomas Hospital in London, United Kingdom where he trained in both specialties for 4 years under Professor E Wilson-Jones, Dr N.P. Smith and Dr Phillip McKee. During this time he obtained the Diploma in Dermatopathology from the Royal College of Pathologists after being the first person to successfully pass the exam when it was launched. For two years after this he did a fellowship in soft tissue tumours under Dr Chris Fletcher.In 1996 he was appointed consultant dermatopathologist and honorary senior lecturer in dermatology at the Institute of Dermatology and since 2002 he has been Director of Dermatopathology at the same institution.

Dr Calonje is a council member of the section of Dermatology of the Royal Society of Medicine, the council of the British Division of the International Academy of Pathology, President of the British Society of Dermatopathology and examiner for the Diploma in Dermatopathology for the Royal College of Pathologists.

He has contributed multiple chapters to major textbooks in Dermatology and Dermtopathology including Fletcher’s Diagnostic Histopathology of Tumours (since the 1st ed), Lever’s Histolopathology of the skin (from the seventh edition), Rook’s Textbook of Dermatology (since the 6th ed) and is a co-editor of the 4th edition of McKee’s Pathology of the Skin. He is co-editor of Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, Histopathology and The British Journal of Dermatology.

He has been involved in over 200 publications in the fields of dermatology, dermatopathology and soft tissue tumours. Dr Calonje has the largest referral practice for dermatopathology in the United Kingdom and organizes three courses every year including a residential one week course in London, an annual Update in Dermatopathology and a two hour weekly advanced course in dermatopathology that runs throughout the year in London. He frequently lectures abroad and has organized dermatopathology courses for the British Division of the AIP in India, Bosnia and Sri Lanka. He is an honorary professor at The University of Copenhagen and an honorary professor at the University Of Slovenia. He has recently in 2022 been awarded the Neil Smith medal for and the medal in recognition of his work in International Medical Education from the British Division of the International Academy of Pathology,. 

Professor Bostjan Luzar MD PhD Course Co-organiser /Lecturer

Professor Bostjan Luzar graduated at the Medical Faculty University of Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1993. After completing his residency in pathology, he became a consultant pathologist at the Institute of Pathology University of Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1998. Dr Luzar received his PhD degree in the field of Pathology in 2001 at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He was elected Head of the Dermatopathology Department at the Institute of Pathology, Medical Faculty University of Ljubljana in 2006 and holds this position up to present.

Following his residency, he has further advanced his knowledge in Dermatopathology at several internationally renowned institutions. He completed a Dermatopathology fellowship with Dr Eduardo Calonje at the Department of Dermatopathology, St John’s Institute of Dermatology, St Thomas’s Hospital in London.

He has published over 70 SCI-indexed scientific papers in peer-reviewed international journals. He has co-authored three chapters for the book McKee’s Pathology of the skin, 4th edition, has contributed one chapter for the forthcoming edition of the book Pathology of the head and neck, 2nd edition and has co-authored the forthcoming Atlas of Soft Tissue Tumours of the Skin. He is currently serving as the editor of the Acta Dermatovenerologica Alpina, Pannonica and Adriatica journal and has reviewed for several international journals mainly devoted to Dermatopathology and Pathology.

Professor Luzar has been a member of the European Society of Pathology, the Dermatopathology Working Group of the European Society of Pathology, the Slovenian Association for Pathology and Forensic Medicine and the Chair of Pathology at the Institute of Pathology, medical faculty in Ljubljana, where he also serves as a senior lecturer in Pathology. He has been the Chief Examiner for the Diploma in Pathology in Slovenia.

Dr László Fónyad Digital  Pathology Expert

Dr László Fónyad graduated from Semmelweis University (SU), Faculty of Medicine (Budapest, Hungary) in 2004. After completing pathology residency, he became a faculty member at the 1st. Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research, SU.

Dr. Fónyad received his PhD degree in digital pathology in 2015 at Semmelweis University. His interest in digital pathology started as a student and still continues. He was the first to introduce digital slides into graduate education in Hungary; he headed numerous pilot projects to adopt digital slides in routine surgical pathology, and also coordinated an international validation study of a digital slide based telepathology system for routine sign-out between Sundsvall Hospital, Sweden and Semmelweis University, Hungary. As a part of his PhD program he received a grant from the Hungarian-American Enterprise Scholarship Fund’s (HAESF) and held a visiting research fellow position at the Pathology Imaging and Communication Technology (PICT) Center, Massachussettes General Hospital, (Boston, US) where he worked with Yukako Yagi, John Gilbertson and Robert B. Colvin.

He is a former advisor to the 3DHISTECH Ltd., (Budapest, Hungary) the pioneer and market leaders in whole slide imaging (WSI), developing high-performance hardware and software solutions for digital pathology.

Dr. Fónyad has organized international pathology courses in dermatopathology in conjunction with the American Austrian Foundation and Semmelweis University, hosting acknowledged pathologists, such as Dr. Calonje and Dr. Steven Billings. Dr. Fónyad is also actively involved in the pathology training of medical students and residents at his institute.

Dr Fonyad organizes and manages the digital slide course collection.

Dr Zlatko Marusic Md PhD Staff Lecturer

Doctor Zlatko Marušić graduated at the University of Zagreb Medical School in Croatia in 2004. After completing his pathology residency in Zagreb, he became a consultant pathologist in 2011. Dr Marušić received his PhD degree in Pathology in 2010 at the University of Zagreb, Croatia.

During and after his residency, he did several rotations in dermatopathology with Dr Eduardo Calonje in London and with Prof Boštjan Luzar in Ljubljana. He continued his training in dermatopathology (Dr Thomas Brenn) at the Western General Hospital (Edinburgh, UK) on a scholarship awarded by the British Division of the International Academy of Pathology (BDIAP), in soft tissue pathology (Dr Steven Billings) at the Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, USA) on a scholarship awarded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), and in gastrointestinal pathology (Dr David Klimstra) at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, USA) on a scholarship awarded by the Sergej Saltykow Foundation.

As a young pathologist, Dr Marušić was awarded a Certificate for Academic Excellence at the OMI/AAF Cleveland Clinic Seminar in Salzburg, Austria, the winner’s prize in a Dermatopathology Slide Seminar Competition at the Royal College of Pathologists Congress in Edinburgh, UK, and the Sergey Saltykow Award for Young Investigators in Pathology at the University of Zagreb.

Dr Marušić has been a member of the European Society of Pathology, United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and is the current Treasurer of the Croatian Society of Pathology and Forensic Medicine. As of 2016, Dr Marušić is an Ambassador for the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.

He is currently a reviewer for several international journals, mainly devoted to dermatology and dermatopathology and currently works at the University Hospital Centre Zagreb as the acting Head of the Surgical Pathology team.

Dr Jose Carlos Cardoso Md Staff Lecturer

Dr. Cardoso graduated from the Medical School of the University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 2002. From 2005 to 2010 completed his training in Dermatology at the Dermatology Department of the University Hospital of Coimbra, Portugal, where he later became Consultant Dermatologist.

From 2010 to 2012, Dr. Cardoso was appointed Clinical Fellow in Dermatopathology at the Dermatopathology Department of the St. John’s Institute of Dermatology, London.

He is currently responsible for the Dermatopathology Unit in the Dermatology Department of Coimbra Hospital and University Center.

Dr. Cardoso has published several papers in international journals, mainly in clinical Dermatology, cutaneous Oncology and Dermatopathology.

He is currently the secretary of the Portuguese Group of Dermatopathology Sá Penella and a member of the Portuguese Society of Dermatology and Venereology, of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, of the International Society of Dermatopathology and a Diplomate Member of the Royal College of Pathologists.

Dr Eglantine Lebas, MD, Staff Lecturer/

Dr Eglantine Lebas graduated with first class honours in Dermato-Venereology from the University of Liège in Belgium in 2008. She also trained at the Hôpital Saint Louis in Paris, France. She has been working as a Consultant Dermatologist for more than 10 years in major University Teaching Hospitals in Belgium and the United Kingdom.
 
She obtained postgraduate certificates in International Health, Tropical Medicine and Medical and Veterinary Mycology at the Tropical Institute of Antwerp in Belgium between 2008 and 2010. She acquired extensive experience in tropical dermatology and leprosy, working as a Consultant Dermatologist in Tanzania, Bangladesh and Botswana. She took part in international research work in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, India and Liberia.
 
In 2018, she completed the two-year Senior Clinical Fellowship in Dermatopathology at St John’s Institute of Dermatology under the mentorship of Dr Eduardo Calonje. She obtained the Board Certifying Examination for Special Qualification in Dermatopathology granted by The International Committee for Dermatopathology and the European Union of Medical Specialists in 2018 and the Diploma in Dermatopathology of The Royal College of Pathologists in 2020.
 
Dr Lebas was appointed honorary senior lecturer at King’s College London in 2021. She was also a lecturer for the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire du Sart Tilman in Liege, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Institute of Tropical Medicine of Antwerp and Queen Mary University of London.
She contributed to several publications in peer-reviewed journals and co-wrote book chapters (Handbook of Dermatology Treatment, Handbook of systemic drug treatment in dermatology). Dr Lebas is a member of the British Association of Dermatologists, the British Association of Dermatopathologists, the Royal Belgian Society of Dermatology and Venereology and the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.
Dr Lebas works now as a Consultant Dermatopathologist at St John’s Institute of Dermatology, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Foundation trust in London.

Dr Maged Daruish, MBBCh, MSc Invited lecturer /Slide co-organizer

Dr Daruish graduated with top honours from the faculty of Medicine at Ain Shams University in 2014. He completed his dermatology training at Ain Shams University hospitals from 2016 to 2019 while concurrently earning his MSc degree in Dermatology.

He has received Dermatopathology travel grants (including from the LDDC in 2019) and an award from the International Society of Dermatopathology in 2021. He trained in Dermatopathology at St. John’s Institute of Dermatology, London, UK and achieved ICDP-UEMS accreditation in Dermatopathology in 2023.

He has made contributions to multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and is a peer-reviewer for Dermatology journals. He also served as a module lead for Dermatopathology in the St John’s online postgraduate diploma of Dermatology.

Dr Daruish is a member of the International Society of Dermatopathology, the British association of Dermatology, and the British Society of Dermatopathology.  Currently, he practices as a Dermatopathologist at Dorset County Hospital and Poundbury Cancer Institute, Dorset, UK.

Claudia Simonetta Calonje MA , Administrator

Claudia Simonetta Calonje graduated in Primary Education from Saint Louis University, St Louis, Missouri, USA. She has a TEFL Diploma from the University of Wales, College of Cardiff, a diploma in Neurolodevelopmental Approach to Teaching from the All kinds of Minds Institute, USA, a Certificate in planning and managing Educational Projects and a Masters Degree in Childhood Studies and Children’s rights from The Institute of Education, UCL London. 

She has extensive experience teaching and developing education summer programs for ESL learners and underprivileged children. She currently directs a charity, Challenging Childhoods focusing on designing tailor made workshops for environmental awareness.veloping and promoting social-emotional education through the arts and children’s literature.
